Effective August 10, 2025, the following adjustment to Item 540 section E., pertaining to Lithium-Ion Batteries will go into effect.
4. Lithium-Ion Batteries
- Lithium-ion batteries and Self-propelled units powered by lithium-ion batteries (class 9) loaded in container/trailer, will be subject to a Hazardous Cargo Fee of $750 per container/trailer, unless otherwise exempted by a specific rate item publication.
- All self-propelled units, not loaded in a container, will be subject to a Hazardous Cargo Fee of $500 per Unit.
- Requirements for units powered by Lithium-Ion Batteries:
- Previously Owned Units must be inspected by Dealer/Mechanic and cleared of leaks, exposed wiring, corrosion, and all recalls completed if applicable.
- Confirmation of inspection with clearance on Dealer/Mechanic letterhead will be required to proceed with transport to final destination.
- Electric/Hybrid vehicles must have no less than 20% and no more than a 30% state of charge at receipt of the unit into Carrier Terminal.
- Self-propelled units such as construction equipment/machinery or recreational vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries must have the battery disconnected.
- Previously Owned Units must be inspected by Dealer/Mechanic and cleared of leaks, exposed wiring, corrosion, and all recalls completed if applicable.
- Electric/Hybrid vehicles requiring charging service will be subject to an additional charge of $100 per unit and shipper must complete a hold harmless prior to service being performed.
